When Timing is Unclear

“So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1: 6-8

There’s something deeply human about wanting to know when.
When will this happen?
When will things change?
When will God move?

(Are we there yet??? We have all asked this question!!)

In Acts 1, the disciples ask Jesus a question that feels incredibly familiar:
“Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

They were looking for a timeline. A resolution. A clear next step.

But Jesus doesn’t give them what they’re asking for.

Instead, He gently redirects them:
“It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.”

In other words—that part belongs to God.

This can feel frustrating at first. We crave clarity. We want certainty. We want to map out the future and understand exactly how everything will unfold.

But Jesus doesn’t leave them empty-handed.
He gives them something better than a timeline—He gives them power and purpose.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…”

God’s sovereignty means He holds the timing.

But His Spirit means we are not left waiting passively—we are sent actively.

There’s a quiet but profound shift here:
From “When will this happen?”
To “Who am I becoming and how am I serving right now?”

We may not know God’s timing, but we are never without His presence.

We may not have the full picture, but we have the Holy Spirit—guiding, strengthening, and empowering us to live faithfully in the present moment.

So often, we treat waiting like a pause in our purpose.

But in God’s kingdom, waiting is not wasted—it’s filled.

Filled with obedience.
Filled with witness.
Filled with quiet, daily faithfulness.

The disciples didn’t receive a calendar—they received a calling.

And the same is true for us.

You may not know what God is doing in your life right now. (I certainly don’t in mine).
You may feel like you’re in a season of unanswered questions or delayed clarity. (!!!!)

But this passage reminds us:

God’s sovereignty is not an obstacle to our purpose—it’s the foundation of it.

Because if He holds the “when,” we are free to fully step into the “what.”

To love.
To serve.
To speak truth.
To reflect Jesus—right where we are.

You don’t need to know the timing to be faithful in the moment.

The Spirit is already at work within you.
