Where Are You?

“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’” — Genesis 3:8-9

God’s first question to humanity was not, “What have you done?”

It was, “Where are you?”

Of course, God already knew the answer. He knew exactly where Adam was hiding. He knew what Adam and Eve had done. He knew their fear, their shame, their guilt, and the consequences that would follow. Nothing had escaped His notice.

Yet God called out anyway.

“Where are you?”

The question was never about God’s awareness. It was about Adam’s willingness to come out of hiding. God was not seeking information. He was extending an invitation.

The question was not for God's benefit. It was for Adam's. God was inviting him to step out of hiding and back into relationship.

How often do we find ourselves in Adam’s place?

We hide behind busy schedules, distractions, pride, or excuses. We withdraw from prayer because we feel ashamed of our failures. We convince ourselves that God must be disappointed in us. We fear bringing Him the very things He already knows—the sin we struggle with, the doubts we wrestle with, the wounds we carry, the fears we cannot seem to shake.

Like Adam, we hide among the trees.

Yet God still comes looking.

Not because He has lost sight of us, but because He desires relationship with us.

The God who walked with Adam in the garden is the same God who pursues His children today. He is not standing at a distance waiting for us to clean ourselves up. He invites us to come honestly before Him. He asks us to bring our whole hearts—the beautiful parts and the broken parts alike.

When God asks, “Where are you?” He is inviting us to examine our own hearts.

Have we wandered from Him?

Have we allowed shame to keep us silent?

Have we neglected time with Him because we fear what He might think?

The truth is that God’s love is not surprised by our failures. His mercy is not exhausted by our weaknesses. His compassion is not diminished by our struggles. He already knows every detail, yet He still desires friendship with us. He still desires to walk with us through the gardens and wildernesses of life.

Today, if you’ve been hiding, hear His voice.

Not a voice of condemnation, but a voice of invitation.

“Where are you?”

Sin says, “Hide.”

God says, “Where are you?”

Shame says, “Stay in the shadows.”

God says, “Come to Me.”

Fear says, “He won’t want you now.”

God comes walking through the garden looking for His beloved creation. A relentless pursuit.

Bring Him your fears. Bring Him your failures. Bring Him your questions, your burdens, and your sins. Repent where repentance is needed, and return to the One who loves you completely.

You do not have to hide from the God who came looking for you.
