A Year of Drought

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” - Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)

When we place our trust and confidence in the Lord, we are like a tree planted by streams of water—living water.

One of the most encouraging things, to me, about this passage is that it does not promise the absence of difficult seasons. In fact, it almost guarantees them. The heat comes. The drought comes. The years of hardship come. The tree is not exempt from those realities simply because it is planted by the stream.

Notice what the passage says. It does not say, “if heat comes.” It says, “when heat comes.” It does not say the tree will never experience drought. It says it has no worries in a year of drought.

God never promises that those seasons will not arrive. He promises something far greater: that they will not destroy us.

The tree does not fear when the heat comes because it knows where its roots are. It does not worry during drought because it knows its source. Though everything around it may appear dry, it is continually being sustained by the stream beside it.

The same is true for us.

When our confidence is in the Lord, we do not have to live in fear when difficult seasons arrive. We do not have to panic when life becomes uncertain. We do not have to believe that every hardship is the end of the story. We know that our God is sovereign over all things. He is not surprised by the season we are walking through, nor has He lost control of it.

Because He is sovereign, we can trust that He will supply our needs and be with us through every season. He gives us exactly what we need for the day in front of us. He sustains us when we feel weak. He strengthens us when we feel weary. He remains faithful even when the landscape around us feels barren.

The confidence of the tree is not in its ability to survive the drought. Its confidence is in the stream.

Likewise, our confidence is not in our ability to withstand the heat, carry our burdens, or somehow make it through on our own. Our confidence is in the Lord, the Sustainer of all things. The One who called us is also the One who keeps us.

And because of that, we can continue to walk through difficult seasons knowing they will not last forever.

What is especially remarkable about this passage is that the tree does more than simply survive. Jeremiah says it “never fails to bear fruit.” Even in seasons of heat. Even in years of drought.

How is that possible?

Not because the tree is exceptionally strong. Not because it can create water for itself. Certainly not because it has learned to endure hardship better than every other tree.

It bears fruit because it remains rooted by the stream.

In the same way, we continue to bear fruit not because we are strong enough, wise enough, or resilient enough on our own. We bear fruit because we are surrendered to the One who promises to supply everything we need. (Philippians 4:19). As we remain rooted in Him, He continues to work in us and through us. He continues to grow us, shape us, refine us, and use us, even in seasons that feel dry.

The goal is not to become strong enough to survive without God.

The goal is to stay rooted in Him.

When the heat comes, stay rooted.

When the drought lingers, stay rooted.

When the future feels uncertain, stay rooted.

For those whose trust and confidence are in the Lord, the promise remains: the stream never runs dry. God will sustain what He has planted, and He will faithfully carry His people through every season until the rain comes again.
